RE: Proposed change to scoring system for leagues
I have played a couple of games of american 11 recently after i've finished other matches, and i do have reservations about its use at our level. The games were very quick and alot of the stragegy and subtly of the game was removed, it would be interesting to see why the SRA wanted to introduce it at our level, can understand at high level that due to long rallies they need to shorten the game but at our level a long rally rarely gets to 10 shots!! It might make it more TV friendly at the high level but at our level i'm not sure. I suggest that we do try it and see how it goes.

Proposed change to scoring system for leagues
As you may already know, the rules of squash are due to change at the start of April 2009 with the introduction of the 'Par' 11 scoring system at club level. Many squash clubs have already started using the new system. The 'Par' 11 scoring system is basically American scoring (point-a-rally) up to 11 points. If the score reaches 10-10, then the first player to reach 2 clear points ahead wins the game (there is no choice of 1 or 2 points as with the current rules and there is no maximum limit).

Many people have severe reservations about using the 'Par' 11 scoring system for the amateur game, particularly that the games will be too short and non-competitive. Partly as a result of this, there is an alternative called 'Par' 15 that can be used instead. 'Par' 15 is point-a-rally scoring to 15 points, where if the score reaches 14-14, then the first player to reach 2 clear points ahead wins the game.

As of the April leagues (starting Monday 30th March), I am proposing that everyone switches to 'Par' 15 scoring for all league matches (still the best of 5 games). The system for entering league results will remain unchanged since this only requires the game results to be entered.

If you have any strong views on this proposed change then please let me know. I understand that some Club's are using a mixture of 'Par' 11 and 'Par' 15, whilst others still are allowing players to choose to use to old scoring system if both players agree. In the interests of simplicity, I think switching to 'Par' 15 for everyone is the best option. If we find, after a few months, that the new system is not working then we can review the situation again.
